Needs Lists

Here's what I haven't seen! Starred birds are ones that are additionally missing from my life lists in a given county.

Clark County

Remaining Code 1 birds (seen 110 of 114)

Almost all of these suckers! I may make it down one more time in conjunction with the Christmas Bird Count in Wahkiakum. It would be nice to pick up Herring Gull and Common Loon especially, as I'd like to get the life list to 175 eventually! It presently sits at 157, so those two could at least bring it to 159.

  1. Pectoral Sandpiper*
  2. Common Loon*
  3. Great Horned Owl
  4. Townsend's Warbler
Clark Remaining Code 2 birds (seen 28 of 37)

Peregrine Falcon and Cooper's Hawk seem like the most likely "accidental" birds that I could pick up whilst looking for other species in December. Together with the two above, it seems like getting the life list to 160 by the end of the year would be doable. 15 birds from there. . . I don't really chase birds, BUT. . .I think I would make an exception down in this corner if it also allowed me to do some of this clean up. Clearly, I still have more higher elevation birding to do in the future in Clark, with Solitaire and Pygmy-Owl still on this list.
  1. Caspian Tern*
  2. American Bittern
  3. Cooper's Hawk*
  4. Northern Pygmy-Owl*
  5. Red-breasted Sapsucker
  6. Peregrine Falcon*
  7. Cassin's Vireo*
  8. Hutton's Vireo*
  9. Townsend's Solitaire*
Clark Code 3 birds (seen 13 of 52)

Yaknow. . . Ross's Goose would be a life bird. I specifically might make a run down for a Ross's Goose - plans be damned! The rest of these. . . goodness there's just a lot of birds down there in Clark. The single bird on this list that I've seen before. . . is Red Crossbill. Getting my life list to 175 may also involve another shorebirding trip. This year, I think many of these birds were swinging through the county at a time when my car was getting an engine replaced!
  1. Ross's Goose*
  2. Brant*
  3. Surf Scoter*
  4. Red-breasted Merganser*
  5. Ruffed Grouse*
  6. Red-necked Grebe*
  7. Clark's Grebe*
  8. Common Nighthawk*
  9. Black Swift*
  10. Calliope Hummingbird*
  11. Black-bellied Plover*
  12. Semipalmated Sandpiper*
  13. Short-billed Dowitcher*
  14. Solitary Sandpiper*
  15. Wilson's Phalarope*
  16. Red-necked Phalarope*
  17. Bonaparte's Gull*
  18. Western Gull*
  19. Red-throated Loon*
  20. Black-crowned Night-Heron*
  21. Golden Eagle*
  22. Sharp-shinned Hawk*
  23. Northern Goshawk*
  24. Roug-legged Hawk*
  25. Western Screech-Owl*
  26. Barred Owl*
  27. Northern Saw-whet Owl*
  28. Western Kingbird*
  29. Eastern Kingbird*
  30. Say's Phoebe*
  31. Red-eyed Vireo*
  32. Canada Jay*
  33. Western Bluebird*
  34. Red Crossbill
  35. Chipping Sparrow*
  36. White-throated Sparrow*
  37. Swamp Sparrow*
  38. Yellow-breasted Chat*
  39. Nashville Warbler*
Finally! I found a code 4+ bird: California Quail (4)

Cowlitz Code 1 birds (seen: 91 of 95)

Yeah. . . on my way down to the Christmas Bird Count in Wahkiakum, I just may stop somewhere and try for a Great Horned Owl! The Cowlitz life list is at 167, so together with that Bullock's Oriole (some day!) I'd be sitting at 169.
  1. Western Grebe
  2. Great Horned Owl*
  3. Pine Siskin
  4. Bullock's Oriole*
Cowlitz code 2 birds (seen 37 of 47)

Common Loon is probably the one that bugs me the most on this list. If you go where they are, they are easy birds! Sharpies are good at what they do, hiding in trees. And Bank Swallow. . . well, I know where to go for them now! Together with the two code 1 birds I'm missing above, I could bump my life list in the county up to 172.
  1. Ring-necked Pheasant
  2. Common Nighthawk
  3. Wilson's Snipe
  4. Solitary Sandpiper
  5. Iceland Gull
  6. Caspian Tern
  7. Common Loon*
  8. Sharp-shinned Hawk*
  9. Bank Swallow*
  10. Townsend's Warbler
Cowlitz code 3 birds (seen 16 of 33)

This feels like a lot of birds left out there - just an indication of how great Cowlitz county really is for birds. Plenty to see here! It's also nice that the local birders are so thorough. Although nothing really crazy came through the county and stuck around this year, there have been some very cool finds over the years! I'm sure that running after some of those will get the life list to 175 without too much effort.
  1. Blue-winged Teal*
  2. Surf Scoter*
  3. Ruffed Grouse*
  4. Red-necked Grebe*
  5. Dunlin
  6. Western Sandpiper
  7. Lesser Yellowlegs
  8. Bonaparte's Gull
  9. Red-throated Loon*
  10. American Bittern*
  11. Rough-legged Hawk
  12. Short-eared Owl*
  13. Peregrine Falcon*
  14. Western Kingbird*
  15. Red-eyed Vireo
  16. Horned Lark
  17. Western Bluebird*
Additional higher coded birds: California Quail (4), Northern Shrike (4) and Red-breasted Merganser (4), Dusky Flycatcher (5), Townsend's Solitaire (4), Yellow-breasted Chat (4)

Skamania Needs List

Code 1 birds (seen: 99 of 101)

I have likely finished looking in Skamania! These two birds were not seen this year but are ones I have found in Skamania in years past.
  1. Virginia Rail
  2. Herring Gull
Skamania Code 2 birds (seen 21 of 26)

These are the Code 2 birds I missed. My post-breeding lull in activity may have played a role in four of them, but. . . darn those Sharp-shinned Hawks! :D I'll have to find one in Skamania someday to take the life list to 175 (it sits at 163 now).
  1. Common Nighthawk*
  2. Sharp-shinned Hawk*
  3. Ash-throated Flycatcher
  4. Red-eyed Vireo*
  5. Purple Martin
Skamania Code 3 birds (seen 20 of 42)

I left a lot of birds on the table here! Some of those Columbia River specialties are just a result of my poor timing weather-wise. East winds kept scoters etc out on the coast, and nearly everywhere in the West half of the county was windy as heck in late October. That said, the starred birds in these lists could bring me over 175 for the life list - a goal down the road.
  1. Eurasian Wigeon
  2. Canvasback
  3. Redhead*
  4. Harlequin Duck*
  5. Red-necked Grebe*
  6. Black Swift
  7. Black-chinned Hummingbird*
  8. Calliope Hummingbird*
  9. Wilson's Snipe*
  10. Bonaparte's Gull*
  11. Northern Harrier*
  12. Northern Goshawk*
  13. Barn Owl*
  14. Northern Saw-whet Owl*
  15. Lewis's Woodpecker*
  16. Peregrine Falcon
  17. Dusky Flycatcher
  18. Say's Phoebe*
  19. Horned Lark*
  20. Marsh Wren*
  21. Townsend's Solitaire*
  22. Chipping Sparrow
Additional higher coded birds on the year list: Trumpeter Swan (4), Ruddy Duck (4), Mountain Bluebird (4), Spotted Owl (4), Bushtit (4), Yellow-breasted Chat (4), Williamson's Sapsucker (4), Western Sandpiper (4), Pine Grosbeak (4), White-breasted Nuthatch (4) and White-throated Sparrow (4). Goodness, that feels like a long list! What a fun year.

Wahkiakum County Needs List
And. . . I need three of these. In December.

Code 1 Birds (seen: 72 of 73)

Dunlin. That's the Code 1 bird I haven't seen this year! I have, however seen one in previous years in Wahkiakum.
  1. Dunlin.
Wahkiakum Code 2 birds (seen 45 of 51)

Welp, three of these ain't showing up in December! I've stricken those, leaving three possible code 2 birds for me to hunt down.

* = needed for life list
  1. White-winged Scoter*
  2. Western Sandpiper*
  3. Sharp-shinned Hawk
  4. Olive-sided Flycatcher
  5. Willow Flycatcher
  6. Canada Jay
Wahkiakum Code 3 birds (seen: 27 of 44)

I'm not going to bother doing strike-throughs here, but those shorebirds would all be a bit of a stretch! Lots of possibilities here in this list, though.
  1. Snow Goose*
  2. Ruddy Duck*
  3. Wild Turkey
  4. Sooty Grouse*
  5. Ring-necked Pheasant*
  6. Semipalmated Plover*
  7. Sanderling*
  8. Short-billed Dowitcher*
  9. Bonaparte's Gull*
  10. Herring Gull*
  11. Pacific Loon*
  12. American Bittern*
  13. Rough-legged Hawk*
  14. Northern Pygmy-Owl*
  15. Merlin*
  16. Horned Lark*
  17. American Pipit*
(Code 4 birds I've picked up in Wahkiakum this year: Trumpeter Swan, Iceland Gull, Cassin's Vireo, Western Bluebird, Yellow-breasted Chat, and Swamp Sparrow. Also, on the last day, a Long-eared Owl at Code 5)
